FDA: Grain-Free Dog Food Could Hurt Your Pup

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- The FDA says it has been receiving reports of dogs falling ill. Officials are now looking into a link between some "grain free" dog foods and "dilated cardiomyopathy" - in other words, canine heart disease.

These foods include peas, lentils, potatoes or other legumes as one of the top three ingredients. Dr. Marine Hartogensis is a vet for the FDA. She says, if you notice these symptoms, it's time to call the vet:

"Weakness or lethargy, the dog is unusually tired. They could collapse. They could build up fluid in their lungs, so they could be coughing.

You may even see them not be able to run as long and as hard as they normally would."

She says the agency is working with pet food companies to find a solution.
