SOMERSET (24/7 NewsSource/WBZ-AM) -- A 20-year-old woman is dead after a crash involving a police cruiser in Somerset. Authorities say a police SUV slammed head-on into a Honda Civic around 12:35 a.m. on Riverside Avenue. The SUV then struck a utility pole, snapping it in half.

The driver of the Honda was extricated and rushed to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She has been identified as Hailey Allard of Somerset.

The officer was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital with unspecified minor injuries.

Mike lives around the corner from the crash scene. He told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Shari Small he heard the crash, and ran around the corner to witness the officer involved trying to perform CPR on the woman.

"You see the police officer's cruiser, and I can't believe he even got out and did what he did if you look at his car," he said. "I think his whole front end was just up to his windshield, it was bad."

"You could tell the cop was in shock, because he was still trying to do his job even though he was hurt," said Kristin, who lives a few houses down. "When the other cops got there, they pulled him aside and made him sit down ... he kept saying he was okay, but he was obviously not okay."

There's no word yet on who was at fault in the crash. State Police and the District Attorney's office are investigating.
