WORCESTER (WBZ-AM) -- Firefighters from across the state are paying their final respects to Worcester Firefighter Christopher Roy, who died battling a massive fire at a multi-family home last weekend.

Calling hours are this afternoon at St. John's Catholic Church in Worcester. A funeral mass will take place there tomorrow, followed by a private burial. There will be firefighters from across the country in Worcester this weekend.

An hour prior to the wake, which runs from 4-8 p.m., a procession of firefighters from around New England began making its way past their fallen brother's casket.

Gov. Charlie Baker was there to show his support.

"This is obviously a horrible time for his family, his parents and daughter and his extended family, and his brothers and sisters in the fire service," Baker said earlier in the week. "The month of December has been especially cruel to the Worcester fire service over the years, and I think it's really important that public officials come out and show their support for these folks, because, let's face it, when the call comes, they answer it."

The 36-year-old Roy was trapped in a pre-dawn fire last Sunday, and later died at the hospital. Roy, who lived in Shrewsbury, was a single father who leaves behind a nine-year-old daughter.

The Worcester Firefighter's Union has set up a memorial fund for Roy's daughter, Ava. Checks can be made out to the Ava Roy Fund and mailed to the Worcester Fire Department Credit Union at 34 Glennie Street, Worcester, 01615.
