BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A 19-year-old is dead after a shooting involving Boston Police officers Monday evening, and police are still searching for a second suspect who fled.

Around 5:16 p.m., two officers responded to reports of shots fired in Town Field, a neighborhood park, when they saw the 19-year-old and a second suspect running down Melville Avenue, BPD Commissioner William Gross told reporters at a press conference Monday night.

The suspects split up and the officers pursued the 19-year-old. When they caught up to him on Penhallow Road, the officers realized the suspect had a gun.

Boston police ordered the suspect to drop his weapon several times, but instead he pointed his gun at the officers and fired, Gross said.

The officers returned fire, but it's not clear how many shots were exchanged. They administered emergency aid until medical crews arrived.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second suspect is still at large.

Gross said some of the officers who responded were wearing the recently-rolled-out body cameras.

"As a part of this investigation, we will be reviewing any body-worn camera footage from any officers participating in not only the pursuit, but also [those who] arrived on-scene," Gross said.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office is investigating the shooting. Gross thanked witnesses who came forward with information, and said the only way to keep violent crime in check is if the community works together to make sure criminals are brought to justice.

"The only concern I have for officers, first responders, and even people in the City of Boston, is there are individuals that think that they can do whatever they want," Gross said. "That is not the case."
