PHOTOS: Water Main Bursts On State Street In Downtown Boston

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A large water main break shut down State Street in Downtown Boston Thursday morning.

The Boston Fire Department said the 12-inch main broke around 11 a.m. By 12:30, they had shut off the main and were working to repair it.

"A fountain erupted in the middle of the road," one person told WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal.

Boston Police are asking the public to stay away from the area of State and Broad Street, saying traffic would be impacted.

As crews work on the damage, State Street is closed between Merchants Row and Chatham Row, and Broad Street is closed at State Street.

In a videos posted to Twitter, heavy damage to the road could be seen.

A city official told WBZ NewsRadio the break is a "significant event."
